DPM is a neutral, transparent, low-volatility, water-miscible solvent. It is intended for use in the printing ink and coatings industry. DPM is hygroscopic and has a mild odor.

In coating formulations, it improves flow and applicability and slows evaporation. Its good miscibility with water and common organic solvents makes it suitable for both solvent-based and "hydro" systems. It is thus used, for example and without limitation, for cellulose lacquers or alkyd resin-based paints, wood stains and varnishes, printing pastes, inks for leather marking, and special inks for stamp pads.

DPM is also used as a synthesis intermediate in the manufacture of other products.

In summary, it may be a component in the following specialties:

  • industrial cleaners, degreasers,
  • paints,
  • metal and other surface cleaners,
  • printing ink solvents,
  • fabric dye coupling agents,
  • cosmetics

Other names sometimes used, though not always accurately, to designate it are:

Dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether
Dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether
(2-methoxymethylethoxy)propanol
3-(3-METHOXYPROPOXY) 1-PROPANOL
