96% concentrated sulfuric acid EN 899
Sulfuric acid concentrated at 96% is a strong mineral acid, miscible with water in all proportions. It appears as a viscous, colorless and odorless liquid, with the molecular formula H2O4S. It is the most widely used industrial chemical in the world. The former name of sulfuric acid is oil of vitriol. On Earth, it is found naturally in acid rain. It is also present in the clouds of the planet Venus. This chemical compound is produced by industrial process. It is derived from the oxidation of sulfur trioxide, which itself comes from the oxidation of sulfur dioxide.
MAIN FUNCTIONS
96% sulfuric acid EN 899 is exclusively used for water treatment, for example for drinking water networks, wastewater treatment and industrial water treatment. Its function is water neutralization. For basification, use caustic soda solution EN 896, approved for water treatment.
INDUSTRIAL USE
The uses below are given for information purposes only. They do not concern 96% sulfuric acid EN 899, reserved for water treatment. Refer to 35% concentrated sulfuric acid for other uses.
- Petroleum industry: oil refining
- Agricultural industry: fertilizer manufacturing
- Chemical industry: manufacturing of phosphoric acid and titanium dioxide (used as white pigment in paints), drying and purification of gases.
- Metallurgical industry: hydrometallurgy of zinc and copper
- Textile industry: manufacturing of synthetic textile fibers
- Manufacturing of parchment paper
- Food industry: manufacturing of a food additive, E513, used to regulate the acidity of certain beverages; used for dehydration of dried fruits
- Manufacturing of lead-acid batteries: electrolyte
- Manufacturing of explosives: TNT, nitroglycerin, picric acid
- Electronics industry: manufacturing of electronic chips
- Pharmaceutical industry: used as a reagent and acidifying agent
- Steel industry: pickling and surface cleaning of steel
- Pulp and paper industry
- Manufacturing of detergents, as a sulfonation agent
PROFESSIONAL USE
- pH regulator: water treatment, biological denitrification. As a pH regulating agent, 96% sulfuric acid EN 899 is used in the treatment of drinking water, wastewater and bathing water. It is also used for soil treatment in market gardening horticulture. 96% sulfuric acid EN 899 is a grade compliant with the purity criteria of the drinking water standard.
With 35% sulfuric acid:
- Descaling of cooling towers in nuclear power plants
- Metal pickling and paint stripper
- Jewelry: pickling of precious metals
- Ore leaching
Mixed with Hydrogen Peroxide, 96% Sulfuric Acid is used in the manufacturing of Caro's Acid, a powerful oxidant that allows various surfaces to be hydrolyzed and made hydrophilic.
OTHER COMMON USES
Unclog sanitary fixtures
USAGE INSTRUCTIONS
- The hydration reaction of sulfuric acid releases a lot of heat, which can raise the water temperature to boiling point. Be sure to pour the sulfuric acid into the water, and not the other way around.
- The reaction between water and sulfuric acid releases hydrogen, a particularly flammable and explosive gas.
- Splashes and vapors of sulfuric acid can be dangerous to humans. Remember to protect your skin and eyes using personal protective equipment. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet.
The acquisition, possession or use of these products by the general public is subject to restrictions. We must keep a sales register with declaration of use.
As of February 1, 2021, the new Regulation (EU) 2019/1148 concerning explosives precursors and which restricts the sale of sulfuric acid to the general public, will enter into force and be applied throughout the European territory.
