Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful oxidizing agent, a weak base, colorless and odorless. The majority of its industrial consumption relates to the bleaching of wood pulp.
It is also used for wastewater treatment. It eliminates sulfur residues from industrial effluents.
In addition to paper, hydrogen peroxide can bleach wood, rattan, stones from tannin stains, as well as stains on textiles.
It is contained in certain solutions intended to purify swimming pool or spa water by destroying green algae, sold under the commercial name "active oxygen".
This product is subject to regulation. The acquisition, possession or use of these products by the general public is subject to restrictions. It cannot be sold without proof of identity and a declaration of intended use. No delivery will be made without a response to this requirement.
As of February 1, 2021, the new regulation (EU) 2019/1148 concerning possible explosive precursors, which restricts the sale of hydrogen peroxide to the general public, will enter into force and will be applied throughout European territory.
Its use as a biocide is regulated and requires a grade with marketing authorization.
