Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful oxidizer, a weak base, colorless, with a neutral odor. The majority of its industrial consumption concerns the bleaching of paper pulp.
It is also used for wastewater treatment. It eliminates sulfur residues from industrial effluents.
In addition to paper, hydrogen peroxide can bleach wood, rattan, stones with tannin stains as well as stains on textiles.
It is contained in certain solutions intended to purify swimming pool or spa water and destroy green algae, sold under the commercial name "active oxygen".
This product is subject to regulation. The acquisition, possession or use of these products by the general public is subject to restrictions. It cannot be sold without proof of identity and declaration of use. No delivery will be made without meeting this requirement.
As of February 1, 2021, the new regulation (EU) 2019/1148 concerning precursors of explosives and which restricts the sale of hydrogen peroxide to the general public, will enter into force and be applied throughout the European territory.
Its use as a biocide is regulated and requires a grade with marketing authorization.
