Iron (III) chloride, also known as ferric chloride, iron perchloride or iron trichloride, with chemical formula FeCl3, is used in several fields. Due to its properties as a Lewis acid and a strong acid, it is used as a catalyst in organic chemistry reactions. It is also one of the most widely used reagents for metal etching, particularly in the case of copper in the printed circuit board industry and stainless steel. It can also be used in external medical preparations as an excellent hemostatic agent in place of the traditional "hydrogen peroxide". Finally, it is widely used as a flocculant in wastewater treatment and in the production of drinking water.
The ferric chloride 40% is a brown, acidic solution widely used in water treatment.
Application in water treatment:
-Coagulation/Flocculation
-Removal of residual phosphorus after biological treatment
