Potassium Silicate is an important chemical substance. It is the result of the reaction in water between sand or silica (SiO2) and potash (potassium hydroxide, KOH). The result is a mixture of potassium oxide (K2O) and silicic anhydride (SiO2). Mixed in different proportions (r=SiO2/K2O), it provides different properties and use in many diverse industrial applications. It can be obtained in solid form or as an aqueous concentrated liquid, odorless, transparent.
Potassium Silicate has properties and uses similar to those of sodium silicate and certain differences (viscosity, solubility, etc.) that offer advantages in many applications for the selection of potassium silicate.
Properties:
- Alkaline liquid stable in storage,
- Good adhesion properties, particularly in combination with mineral surfaces,
- Heat and acid resistant,
- Does not release harmful gases/vapors in case of fire
Silicate applications:
- Building material component
- Additives for acid-resistant cements and refractory products.
- Hardener and pore sealer for mineral substrates by silicification (plaster, stones and mortars, etc.)
- Mineral paints, binder for pigments
- Adhesive and plastic component
- Food additive as anti-caking agent (E560)
- Detergents (builder, alkalinity agent, buffer, anti-corrosion additive)
- Liquid glass, fluxing component, etc.
