isopropyl alcohol

Isopropyl alcohol (CAS 67-63-0) or isopropanol, propan-2-ol, IPA (for IsoPropyl Alcohol) is a secondary alcohol with the chemical formula CH3CH(OH)-CH3. It is obtained by reducing acetone with sodium tetrahydroborate. It is a raw material widely used for various applications.

It appears as a colorless liquid with a faint ether odor.

MAIN FUNCTIONS

INDUSTRIAL USE

  • Electronics industries: cleaning solvent for integrated circuits and semiconductors.
  • Printing: cleaning, degreasing of offset presses, print smoothing in polysmooth for 3D printing
  • Paint and varnish industries: used in formulations for varnishes, paints, primers, inks, strippers and adhesives
  • Detergent industries: used in the manufacture of degreasers and cleaners
  • Chemical industry: raw material used notably for the manufacture of acetone and glycerin
  • Petrochemical industry: used as a gasoline additive

PROFESSIONAL USE

  • Medical use: part of one of the two formulas recommended by WHO for the formulation of alcohol-based hand sanitizer (the other being based on ethanol).
  • Laboratory use and in natural history museums for preserving organisms in jars.

OTHER COMMON USES

It is found in many household products: shoe polish, insecticide, window cleaner, air freshener, automobile windshield de-icer... It can be safely used on most plastics.
It is used by people doing arts and crafts to clean paint, varnish and inks.
Photography enthusiasts use it to clean their camera lens.
Diluted in a proportion of 70% isopropyl alcohol to 30% water, it is then called rubbing alcohol. Households use it for cleaning surfaces.

USAGE RECOMMENDATIONS

In the case of plastics or materials sensitive to pure solvents such as isopropanol, it may be preferable to use an aqueous solution of 70% by volume isopropyl alcohol.
